Keep doors and windows and side gates locked at all times.

Make it look like someone is at home by keeping lights on when you are not in. You can use timing switches or leave music or the television on.

Divert your landline to your mobile and don’t post your location on social media.

Keep the grounds and external area of your property neat and tidy. The lawn should be cut regularly, the garden kept tidy and any waste removed.

Make sure fences around the perimeter of your property are in good condition.

Install good external security lighting.

Hide house keys and car keys from your front door area or near your letterbox, as these can be hooked using a device through the letterbox.

Remove valuable items from view, especially around windows.

Keep ladders and tools stored away as these can be used for burglars to gain access to your property.

If you are getting building/construction work done to your home keep the outside of your house neat and tidy, don’t leave boxes for new items purchased like TV’s, stereos visible and hide copper pipes.

Keep an eye out for tape on your lock.  A burglar’s trick is to leave some tape on your lock which if not broken is a sign you are not home.

Keep an eye out for markings on your pavement outside your house.  This is another sign that your home is a target and being watched.
